SURVIVOR LIBERATION

THROUGH MUSIC

Electronic musician and hyper-deity for survivors of sexual violence. Here to liberate us and the spaces we move through with the transcendent power of electronic music

'Numbness is not always the absence of feeling. Sometimes it’s an accumulation of feelings. And as survivors, we often have to hold the truth of what we experience. But now, we’re all holding something, whether we want to or not…Everybody is impacted.’

DEVELOPMENT HISTORY

In 2021-2022, we started working on making Violet a reality. Initially, we were commisisoned to realise her as a digital character, but we've realized that this approach isn't the most effective, deep and embodied way to share our story right now.

Our goal is to breathe new life into club spaces. Empower survivors. To create safe spaces where we can express ourselves free of acts of violence. The way to bring this to life is through the senses, experience design and electronic music, not a 3D avatar.

VIOLET is rooted in the origins of electronic music, a genre that embodies inter-dependent politics. A space which open minds and through radical queer politics. The dance floor is inherently designed to for us to come together, and feel into our bodies and transform whatever comes up into the collective action of dancing, releasing and letting it all out on the floor.

VIOLET is a music liberation. VIOLET is a feeling. You, I and we are all VIOLET

Find out more about the 2021-2022 which included two different sizeable operatic commisisons to explore Violet as an avatar and develop the sound world & research around her.

2021

In 2021, Royal Opera House (ROH) and National Ballet of Canada (NBoC) commissioned Violet to collaborate with Canadian digital tech innovators SIRT to develop and compose a short demo: FEEL. Building on this commission, V was shortlisted and since won the ‘Beyond Opera’ prize to host a new experience on the main stage of the Finnish Opera House in November 2022.

2022

VIOLET DISRUPTION was tested as an avatar at the Finnish National Opera House. Stephanie was commisssioned to write an original composition interwtining operatic voices & electronic music to be performed at CircOpera 2.0. Working with motion capture and gaming technology Violet has been developed over nine months and will be projected onto the main stage at the Finnish National Opera, introducing the audience to an evening’s entertainment with a burst of rave and opertatic fusion. It was fully spatialised with the Opera House’s 7.1 sound system.

2023

The community came together to begin to move into the new phase of Violet, as supported by OKRE foundation we brought together a team of survivors to explore the sound world and the intial ritualistic structures that keep survivors safe inside our spaces

Here is where we begin to unpick the need for an avatar, and begin to realise a more embodied stage design building upon the practice of BitterSuite is the root to go down.
